Transcript of this chapter:

narrator: Later that afternoon...
rebecca: This is the Municipal Building, Crystal. It hold all of the public offices... the town hall, the library, the courthouse.
rebecca: You'll need to go to the clerk's office to register as a resident demon.
crystal: Who should I go see?
rebecca: No one. There aren't enough people in town to run things, so the place is pretty much self-serve.
rebecca: We only have the one civil servant, and you just caught him trying to kill Turnip.
crystal: Not to mention trying to kill me.
crystal: Holy cow! He's loose!
sheriff: Good afternoon, all.
crystal: What are you doing free?
sheriff: Where else would I be?
crystal: In jail... awaiting a trial! You're a criminal!
sheriff: I've already had my trial, and judgment has already been passed.
crystal: I... I... don't understand. You were guilty!
rebecca: So what was your punishment?
sheriff: I have it right here...
sheriff: "To cleanse the mind, bring nature back into the heart."
crystal: Give yourself up! I'm putting you under arrest.
sheriff: Only I have the authority to make arrests in this town.
crystal: But you're a criminal!
rebecca: He also happens to be the Sheriff as well. You don't need to accuse him... in fact, he's already been through his trial.
crystal: What?! Where was I?!
sheriff: After I climbed out of the rubble, I came straight here to be put on trial. Trails are speedy in Spider Cliff.
crystal: You just willingly went to your trial?!
sheriff: Why wouldn't I? Here in Spider Cliff, we're all responsible for seeing to a just and proper punishment for our crimes.
rebecca: What did the judge say?
sheriff: I have my judgment right here...
sheriff: "To cleanse the mind, bring nature back into the heart."
crystal: Prepare to die!
rebecca: Hold on, Crystal.
crystal: But... but he's on the loose!
rebecca: He's already had his trial. Now he's on his way to pay for his crimes.
crystal: What?! You're letting him off!
rebecca: I have nothing to do with his trial. He's already been before the judge.
rebecca: What did the judge have to say?
sheriff: I have my judgment right here...
sheriff: "To cleanse the mind, bring nature back into the heart."
crystal: What does that mean?
rebecca: It means the Sheriff has to perform some community service...
rebecca: There's an empty lot nearby, and the Sheriff needs to plant a garden there.
sheriff: Exactly.
crystal: That's a judgment?!
sheriff: That's what the judge said.
crystal: But it doesn't make any sense!
rebecca: Sure it does, Crystal. It says that the Sheriff has to perform some community service.
sheriff: Specifically, it says I have to plant a garden here in town.
crystal: Why wasn't I at your trial?
sheriff: Why would you want to be there?
crystal: To testify!
sheriff: Oh, that's no necessary in Spider Cliff. The justice system here works a little differently than what you're familiar with, but trust us when we say it works.
crystal: If you're going to try to kill people... including me... and the judge hands down a riddle, of course you're going to say it works!
crystal: That's it?! You tried to kill me, and your punishment is to plant a garden?!
sheriff: Yep.
crystal: I demand a re-trial!
rebecca: Crystal, calm down. The judge has passed down her judgment. We can't question her reasoning.
crystal: Who is this judge that hands out these ridiculous judgments?
rebecca: Madame Turing handles all of our court proceedings. She's the judge and our notary public.
crystal: I thought that I'd already met everyone in town. Now I hear about this judge... how many people are hiding in the woodwork?
rebecca: I'll introduce you to her. Follow me.
rebecca: This is our courtroom.
crystal: I don't see anyone here. There's only a...
crystal: No no no no no!
crystal: You've got to be kidding! A fortune-telling machine?
rebecca: Madame Turing.
crystal: This town is insane!
rebecca: Probably. Now I'm going to find your "demon in residence" form. I'll be right back.
crystal: Okay, I'll stay here... with Madame Turning.
crystal: Was this a plea bargain?
sheriff: No. There is no bargaining allowed in our justice system. Everyone gets exactly the punishment that they deserve.
crystal: I can see how these light sentences wouldn't be a deterrent to crime.
crystal: It says... Deposit five cents for court costs. Judgment will drop into chute below. Manufactured by Leibniz and Sons Vending Company, Inc.
crystal: Hi. I'm Crystal.
crystal: So... how's things with you? Get out of the box much?
crystal: This is ridiculous! She's just a stuffed dummy. I don't see how this thing could possibly pass judgments.
crystal: Okay, Madame Turing, give me some justice.
crystal: It says... "There will be ample time to reflect before the day of reckoning."
crystal: Oooo... spooky.
rebecca: Did you just get a judgment?
crystal: Yeah.
rebecca: You shouldn't have done that! You didn't need any judgment. Now who knows what will happen to you.
crystal: I'll take my chances.
rebecca: I have your "demon in residence" form here. You need to fill it out and get some sponsor signatures.
crystal: Signatures?
rebecca: Yes. You need to get six residents to sign for you.
crystal: Six? Are there even six people living here?!
