Transcript of this chapter:
narrator: Crystal views the surroundings through her attic window...crystal: Spider Cliff actually looks nice from here. What a pity I won't be able to enjoy this view again.
crystal: Right now, Rebecca and the Sheriff will be getting ready to play board games over at the diner. Alex is still dug in over by the woods. Turnip's probably found that last trap by now.
crystal: And soon, Barlow will steal the Sheriff's key and make for the cannon. Hehe... and I'll be ready for him.
crystal: Oh, it's starting to get late. I'd better get going.
crystal: Hmm... I haven't seen many towns that look this good at dusk.
crystal: Nothing to do now but wait.
crystal: When Barlow gets here with the key, I'll make him look me in the eye and turn him to stone. It's as easy as that.
crystal: Okay, Barlow, I'm ready when you are.
narrator: Meanwhile...
barlow: I know she's coming. She should have stolen the key by now.
barlow: Where is she? I'm going to wait right here all night if I have to!
crystal: How odd. There's no one here in this town, but a lot of these shops are open.
crystal: It's as if everyone is disappearing mysteriously...
sheriff: They are disappearing, but it's no mystery.
sheriff: A lot of the residents started taking visits to bigger places like Sprawling-Mossville, and before long this became more of a summer place... and eventually not even that.
sheriff: Most of the shopkeepers moved away years ago, but left the stores open on an honor system for the citizens who stayed. By now, they've probably forgotten all about us.
crystal: Forgotten about their shops? These are pretty sizable assets...
sheriff: You'd be surprised. Spider Cliff has that effect on people. Sometimes it's hard to even remember where it's located.
crystal: Hmm. This old fountain appears to be out of order.
crystal: There's a plaque... This fountain was erected in the memory of Doctor Jedediah Bean, who built Spider Cliff and cleared the region of giant spiders. It is his hands that shape our town, and his wisdom that shapes our future.
crystal: I think Barlow's last name is Bean. He must be related to this guy.
crystal: Hi, Rebecca.
rebecca: Oh, hello Crystal. What are you up to tonight?
crystal: Well, I guess I'm just going to explore the town. There's a lot more to Spider Cliff than I first realized.
rebecca: I'm glad you like it here. When I first came to town I was about your age. I didn't appreciate Spider Cliff at first, but now there's no place I'd rather be.
rebecca: I would hate for the modern world to discover our town... they'd utterly ruin it. I'll do anything to keep Spider Cliff the way it is.
rebecca: I suspect you're starting to feel the same way. I just want you to know, I'm glad you're here.
crystal: Uh, thank you.
crystal: Why did you come to Spider Cliff? What attracted you?
rebecca: Well, I have to admit I came here for the wrong reasons. I guess you could say I was running away from who I was. This town is a good place to start over.
crystal: I'm going to take a walk.
rebecca: You do that. The Sheriff is going to be here soon for our game. We'll probably play until midnight. Why don't you drop by after that... we have something we want to talk to you about.
crystal: Okay. See you later.
